Not a single day goes by that one of our customers doesn’t inquire about vintage lucite furniture they are searching for. The popularity of this style is remarkable.

Lucite, associated with decor of the 1960s and 1970s, was introduced by DuPont in 1936, the same year Rohm & Haas debuted Plexiglas. That’s right, the difference is a trademark!

World War 2 put a stop to the design of the “floating effect” furniture because the material was needed for the war efforts. It exploded in the 1960s and 1970s and became synonymous with those decades for that reason.

Although considered a vintage design and style, many modern furniture companies feature lucite in their collections today.

Behind the scenes at Circa Who.
Here at Circa Who there are so many things that go on every day. Two of our owners Mila and Juan are always out buying, our sales manager Emily is talking to clients who walk in the store and through inquires on our website and selling to them as well. Our repair man Red is in the back fixing and repairing items that were just bought and last we have our marketing manger Candace who monitors our social media, website and is our photographer. Not one day is the same around here. There are always new projects going on and new exciting things happening.

Mila: What do you like most about the store?: I love to create things & mix colors and items. Mixing Lucite coffee table with rattan chairs. To make a visual come alive! Favorite piece of furniture?: I love pagoda lamps & the Mario Lopez Torres monkey floor lamp. Tip for buying vintage furniture: If you love something buy it, because you may never see it again! In this business I have lots so many opportunities to buy items that I fell in love with but didn’t buy it and then when I went back to get it they weren’t there.

Emily: What do you like most about the store? I love furniture. I just love it. It’s who I am.

Summer is near and Circa Who is getting ready!

Mix & matching different styles of furniture is what we love to do. From a newly lacquered faux bamboo side table to a high-back rattan chair. Different colors and styles is our go to for fun and exciting decor! In this scene we also pieced in a parakeet toucan table lamp by Mario Lopez Torres, a green shell decor plate, solid white pillow, orange throw blanket and a hand painted umbrella. All perfect for a Florida summer home or a patio!

Vintage furniture is so much fun to play with and have different mix & matching colors and styles. It is a great way to design your one of a kind space.

8 Tips for Buying Vintage Furniture

Buying furniture is always something that can be difficult because you want the piece to look fabulous in your home. Buying vintage furniture is such a great way to find durable, long lasting furniture for less. You just need to know a few things before you jump in and start buying!

1.Find the right place to shop. Knowing where to buy vintage furniture is key! Visit different vintage furniture stores that are local to you and find which one has the best style and price for you. There are so many stores out there but with all different styles. Find the couple stores that best fits you and visit them a few times to see what they get in so often and a feel of their prices.

2. Figure out what you are looking for & the specific price rang. When you have figured out what piece of furniture or decor you are looking for it is best to have an idea what you want to spend. That way when you go to the furniture shop you can look around and compare the price you have in mind and what is in stores. Sometimes the price you have in mind is pretty spot on but sometimes for example, if you find a dresser you really love and its over your price range you may have to consider if its been newly painted and/or if its worth it for you.

3. Don’t be Afraid of Imperfections. Vintage furniture is gently used furniture. Of course it is important to see if there is any wear or tear but many times it can be fixed. Don’t let minor scratches worry you, a professional can always refinish the piece before you bring it home.

4. Use the Imperfections to Bargain. Examine a item before you buy it. If you see an item that you want to purchase and is has a few more scratches and scuffs, use that to your advantage. Be sure the imperfections can be fixed before you are ready to pay.

5. Make Sure It Fits! A lot of vintage furniture stores have a no return policy so make sure it fits. If you looking for a mirror to hang up in your living room, be sure to measure the wall and the ceiling height. That way you are more than sure of the dimension you need. If you are not 100% sure if the piece will fit you can ask if you can put a hold on the item you are wishing to purchase and most of the time they will give you a 24 hour hold.

6. Refinish & Re-purpose for Your Style. Find out if the piece you are looking at can be redone. For example, if your looking at a set of dining chairs and you absolutely love them but wish the color was different ask if they can be repainted and/or reupholstered. Most of the time they can be and the store can recommend someone to you if needed. This way you get the design you want.

7. Keep an Eye Out for Pieces Sold Separate. The best thing about vintage furniture stores is you can always find pieces that are sold as a single. You may think why would I want to buy only one? When you find a few different things and put them together it often looks way better than items sold together.

8. Buy What You Love. It is always best to buy what you love and not something that you think someone else will.

Buying vintage furniture & decor adds creativity & uniqueness to your home. You have the change to be unique & shoe off your fabulous finds you got for a bargain! When looking for vintage furniture it is a lot different than going to a thrift store or a garage sale. Now there are sometimes you can get lucky at thrift stores or even estate sales. You just need to be on the hunt! For the most part you want to look for vintage stores & event antique stores depending on your style.

When going to these stores you can find pieces for a great price & even make them your own. How?, by re-painting a console or dresser or re-upholstering a sofa or chair. You can make the furniture & decor to your style & liking, that’s the best part! Then, there will be times you walk into a shop & you will find the most amazing beautiful piece of furniture that is exactly the same color of your living room & you must have it! Its amazing what some stores have that is already newly lacquered or newly upholstered. You must keep in mind though sometimes those fabulous pieces that you must have does come with a heaver price tag. But!, you don’t have to do any work for it & it will look stunning in your home.

Vintage furniture is amazing because you know the quality of it is great. Some pieces have been around for 20-30 years and still look brand new. So, don’t be afraid to go vintage shopping. You will be surprised with what you find.

This Faux Bamboo collection by Omega is one of my favorites.
I see it as a 1970’s Palm Beach interpretation of the Dorothy Draper chests.
You won’t find many of these collections in great shape since they are made of 1970’s pressboard.
PLEASE don’t let that stop you from buying these BEAUTIES.
